The service of the former organization, 117th Infantry, is indicated by the blue shield for Infantry. The chevron rompu represents the "Breaking Through" of the Hindenburg Line during World War I. The three mullets symbolize the organization's battle honors.

The coat of arms was originally approved for 117th Infantry Regiment, Tennessee National Guard on 7 June 1934. It was redesignated for the 117th Armored Infantry Battalion, Tennessee National Guard on 28 July 1955. It is redesignated for the 117th Infantry Regiment, Tennessee National Guard on 11 October 1960. The insignia was redesignated for the 117th Regiment, Tennessee Army National Guard, with blazon and symbolism revised, on 15 April 1997.
